Your Guide to the Reality of Animal Circus

"The academic panel concluded that there appears to be little evidence to demonstrate that the welfare of animals kept in travelling circuses is any better or worse than that of animals kept in other captive environments" - Executive Summary of the DEFRA Circus Working Group 2007

A Simple Point, A Fair Deal

Humane Watch is a major critic of the world's largest animal rights organization, the Humane Society of the United States. We know that animal rights philosophy is not founded any real rational argument. It's an argument to emotion and at worst is anti-human. However, the other major evil regarding the business of animals rights - and I do mean "business" - is that in addition to inciting violence and pushing radical views the top organizations don't seem to actually do much to actually save and protect animals. They accumulate a fortune in donations, but very little of it seems to go back into actively caring for animals.

On 19th May 2011 Humane Watch renewed its pledge to take down its site if the HSUS gave 50% of its budget to pet shelters. It had been one year since they first made that pledge. According to Humane Watch's publishing of HSUS's figures the group still gives less than 1% to pet shelters. Humane Watch wrote in their post:

"We have yet to hear anything but silence from HSUS and its CEO, Wayne Pacelle.

Sure, it’s a little discouraging. We’d be justified if we were harsh. But let’s give HSUS a break. When you spend $121 million a year, it’s not like you can just go from 0 to 60 at the drop of the hat.

After all, HSUS needs to be “humane” and pay its 30-odd salaried lawyers. The group’s lobbyists have mouths to feed. And—c’mon!—redirecting that $2.5 million earmarked for HSUS’s pension plan? Retired executives previously making six-figure salaries have to enjoy the good life.

Seriously, though, it’s never too late for HSUS to do the right thing and start spending its donors’ money where they think it's going—to pet shelters, mostly. Pacelle can write pat-on-the-back blog articles all he wants (as he did yesterday), but sooner or later HSUS is going to have to put its money where his mouth is."

Astley's Legacy was formed to counter the misinformation and propaganda spread by animal rights activists. As well as fighting the corner for circus animals and their trainers, we are here to promote and celebrate the cultural heritage of circus in general, and especially in the country of its birth - Great Britain.
